What is The Modern Craft Project?
The Modern Craft Project is a quest to identify and support today’s modern craftsmen who want to take their work, their skills and themselves further. Inspired by Ketel One Vodka and in partnership with Wallpaper* magazine, the Modern Craft Project recognises, celebrates and supports creative, talented and entrepreneurial modern craftsmen who live in Australia, Brazil, Germany, United Kingdom and United States.
What is the Ketel One Legacy?
The Ketel One Legacy is the prize fund which has been created to inspire and celebrate selected recipients in their pursuit of excellence. Ultimately, up to three modern craftsmen from the Modern Craft Project in each participating country will win a share of the Ketel One Legacy. The Ketel One Legacy prize fund, worth [30,000 GBP], is intended to help them in their pursuit of excellence – for example, buying new equipment, taking on an apprentice, or finding creative space in which to work. They will demonstrate mastery of traditional skills applied in a modern context, showing an outstanding passion and dedication for excelling in their craft. Please see terms and conditions for further information on how the prize fund will be divided amongst recipients.
Who is behind this project?
As a contemporary, world-class vodka born out of 300 years of distilling expertise, Ketel One Vodka is the perfect embodiment of modern craft. Together with our partner, Wallpaper* magazine, we created the Modern Craft Project to celebrate our commitment to modern craft. Our aim is to share shining examples of modern craft and support modern craftsmen around the world through the new Ketel One Legacy prize fund.
Who can participate?
Modern craftsmen, over 25 years of age, living in one of the participating countries.
What are the entry criteria?
Above all else, your work should bring to life the collision of modernity and heritage. In our opinion, a modern craftsman is someone who builds upon the past to create something unmistakeably contemporary. Someone who wants to push their work and their craft further, and establish a legacy of their own. Entry to the Modern Craft Project is open to all those who consider themselves skilled in a “modern craft”. Entrants need not undertake their modern craft on a full-time and/or professional basis. Entries from amateur and/or part-time modern crafts-people are eligible (provided such entries comply with the rest of these terms and conditions). Although, there is no definitive list of what constitutes a “modern craft” itself for the purposes of eligibility for entry to the Modern Craft Project. As a broad guideline regarding the attributes of a modern crafts-person, the Promoter considers that a modern crafts-person (i) does reinterpret traditional skills and values in a modern way, harness innovative technologies alongside traditional materials or skills, and is a progressive thinker with an entrepreneurial spirit, and (ii) is not a large scale manufacturer or purely a contemporary artist or product designer, and does not use only traditional methods or techniques without a modern twist. Entrants will be able to specify as part of their entry why they should be considered.
What do I need in order to participate?
You will need to have photographs and/or films showcasing your work and your skills, as well as a project that you would like us to support. If you consider yourself a modern craftsman, you can apply now to be part of the Modern Craft Project and for the chance to win a share of the Ketel One Legacy. We would love to know more about you.
Which countries are participating?
For this first year, the Modern Craft Project will take place in Australia, Brazil, Germany, the United States of America and the United Kingdom. Please look at the news on each country page to know more about their project’s calendar.
Can I enter if I don't live in one of the five participating countries?
Unfortunately, you cannot enter if you do not live in one of the five participating countries. Nevertheless, we are always interested in discovering new talent, so do drop us a line anyway. Hopefully we will be able to bring the Modern Craft Project to your country soon!
What do I get if I'm selected to be part of The Modern Craft Project?
The selected modern craftsmen can look forward to recognition from the international creative community (thanks to our creative partner, Wallpaper* Magazine) as well as fantastic global exposure. This starts online, with both craftsmen and their portfolios featured in our showcase; and continues in a multi-media Modern Craft Project Exhibition. There is also the chance to be included in our online Modern Craft Directory – a unique go-to guide for people, galleries, groups and corporations seeking contemporary craftsmen.
What do I get if I’m chosen to win a share of The Ketel One Legacy?
Out of the selected modern craftsmen, as part of the project, our outstanding global panel – which includes Bob Nolet (11th generation distiller of Ketel One) and Tony Chambers (Editor in Chief of Wallpaper* Magazine) – will choose up to three modern craftsmen to win a share of the Ketel One Legacy. Those selected by the panel will win a prize designed to help them further their work and vision and devote new energy to their craft.
